Magic Quilts Objective: Students will create a story quilt based on significant events from the Historical Fiction book of their choice.
Basic Materials: large square sheet of white construction paper, ruler, markers or colored pencils or crayons, and scissors
Directions:
1. Find a Historical Fiction book that interests you. Have your book approved by your teacher.
2. Measure and draw light pencil lines to divide the white paper square into thirds across and lengthwise. This will create nine equal squares for your paper quilt.
3. Look through your book to help you remember objects that were important to the story. These objects should represent something significant, like a person or an event. List at least six of them.

Circle four objects from the list. These are the four you should include on your quilt. With each object you circled, write a short one sentence description as to what it symbolizes or represents.
5. Locate the four squares in the corners of the quilt. Draw one object in each square. Leave room in the same square to copy your sentence about the object. It is a good idea to draw with pencil first and then trace with a pen or other thin marker.
6. Now you can decorate the four remaining squares however you choose. You may choose to draw, color, use wrapping paper, designed paper, fabric, etc. HAVE FUN!
